Subject: “Scott Angelik” was pulling on a Juul at the edge of the plaza, getting a few good puffs in before making himself a worthy accessory for family photos. He was dressed identically to his Instagram photo, which was not surprising—but it was probably the first time I appreciated the full extent of the photo editing that went into images on the platform.

Scott’s physique was just as lithe as we had seen—but where his skin had appeared bronzed and youthful, here in the midday sun he looked pale and flabby despite being skinny. Stubble was visible on his chest and stomach. Makeup had been applied to his body as well as his face and was most apparent on his inner arms…surefire evidence of hiding track marks. Even without the evidence of his arms, the glazed shimmer of his eyes proved that he was gazing out at the world through an opiate gauze high as fuck on heroin.

The tattoo on his back was partially concealed by the wings he wore, almost like the tattoo provided the root from which the wings grew. It was no less striking than the version I’d glimpsed on his profile picture—if anything, it was even more arresting in person. As though it glowed with a life of its own, shining more vibrantly than the cheap glitter around his eyes.

Misha told me to let her take the lead on the interview, as she would have a better shot at getting through to him. It was hard for me to bite my tongue through all the talk of Hidden Worlds and magical travel, which eventually made it impossible for me to hang back.
